Barnardos R-U Safe / Sexual Exploitation and Missing Service?

Location: East of England

R.U.Safe? works from the premise that young people under the age of 18 who are being sexually exploited, are being abused. The service aims to reach out to vulnerable young people by providing a Holistic package of care delivered through Assertive outreach, drop-ins and preventative groups/programmes. The service works with young people to promote safety, healthy relationships, reduce risky behaviour, increased self worth and self-esteem, so as to raise their aspirations and enable them into making positive choices for the future.

Our work also involves encouraging and supporting young people in exiting harmful relationships, to which they can fall extremely vulnerable to. Our direct work includes, but not limited to, a range of activities, programmes and opportunities that assist in addressing their diverse and complex needs. We have a client centred approach and each young person will be assessed on their individual circumstances. We work closely with Thames Valley Police so as to provide a service to Young people, aged between 11 to 18 who have returned home after being reported missing. – Young People who have missing episodes are vulnerable to Sexual Exploitation.

ROSE Project- Reaching Out on Sexual Exploitation

Location: East of England

ROSE is part of the Magdalene Group and includes a campaign to highlight the issue of CSE in Norfolk to professionals but also the general public. The project side of things include: Befriending- We receive referrals from our Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) in Norfolk to work 1:1 with young people at risk of or who have been sexually exploited to be a listening ear to them and to help them through their situation. We aim to work with the young person in an informal setting to help them think about keeping safe and be able to identify exploitative relationships and improve their life chances. Return to Home visits- We conduct return to home visits with young people who have run away or gone missing from home or care to ensure the young person’s well-being and to help them keep safe.

There is an element to see if there are concerns regarding CSE and if so we can refer the young person to one of our other services such as befriending. For other issues that are identified then we feed these back to our MASH so the relevant action can be taken. We are part of the MASH and attend daily briefings to receive referrals for return to home visits working with the Police Missing Person’s Co-ordinator. Youth Work- We provide a youth group and other youth work programmes to young people at risk and help to keep them safe from exploitative relationships but also to help give them better life chances. Street Outreach- We are currently developing a street outreach project where we will target known hotspots and potentially vulnerable young people and help to keep them safe from exploitative situations. Telephone Helpline and Live Chat- A service being developed -a telephone helpline and live chat service for young people who might be getting caught up in online risky behaviour and to women who are working in sex work online.
